The
3rd ray word of Power is composed of 4 words with 16 letters or
sounds. The processes of Intention and Visualization have been
followed, and again the four stages of the Projection technique
have been concluded. At the point of highest tension, the disciple
utters the Word of Power for the third ray. It is not easy for
the disciple on this ray to achieve the necessary focal point
of silence; his intense fluidity leads to many words or to great
mental activity, frequently carried forward under the impulse
of glamour. This lessens the potency of what he seeks to do. But
when he has succeeded in achieving "mental silence"
and is simply a point of intelligent concentration, then he can
use the Word of Power with great effectiveness. The difficulty
is that he has to overcome the tendency to use it with the idea
of physical plane results in his consciousness. Always he works
from the angle of that divine quality which characterizes matter;
just as the second ray disciple works always from the angle of
quality and the first ray disciple from the positivity of spirit.
But once he intuitively comprehends and factually grasps the concept
that spirit-matter are one reality, and once he has achieved within
himself the sublimation of matter, then he can divorce himself
from all that the human being understands in relation to form.
He can then utter the Word of Power which will make possible his
complete identification with spirit, via the antahkarana. This
word is "Purpose itself am I." [RI518]
The
3rd ray Word of Power "PURPOSE ITSELF AM I" is composed
of four words with 16 sounds. Let us examine the numerical significance
of the "4" and the "16".
Through
meditation and contemplation on the word of power "PURPOSE
ITSELF AM I" we should be able to discern and garner occult
instruction as to the nature of the universal geometry, patterns,
numbers and forms of the great 3rd Ray of Active Intelligence.
As we do so we bring into close relation three allied 3rd ray
centers, the Pleiades, Saturn and Earth.
I
would remind you that the sixth
Cosmic Path, the Path of Training Solar Logoi, leads to the Pleiades,
the expression of the cosmic throat center and 3rd Ray.
This
sixth Path is the Path being tread by Sanat Kumara, and when this
is properly understood, it accounts for the real meaning behind
the phrase that S.K., Who is the correspondence to the 3rd Personality
expression of our Planetary Logos is the "personal disciple
of the solar Logos". Reflect on this.
I
remind you; tthe rays of the Earth Logos are simply 1, 2, 3 --
which when added together produce a sum of "6".
Great
Goat Star: Aliath
As
well, my brothers, this morning I will be discussing the Great
Goat Star with you, ALIATH, as I legitamately prefer to spell
it and "The Law of Elevation".
The
Goat star leads us into arid ways in search of food and water.
This is our "need for green", but the Goat leads us
up ever on to the mountain top of Initiation. As AAB reminds us:
"At the foot of the mountain the goat, the materialist, seeks
for nourishment in arid places. The scapegoat on the way up finds
the flowers of attained desire, each with its own thorn of satiety
and disillusionment. At the top of the mountain the sacred goat
sees the vision and the initiate appears."
Please
briefly examine the numerology herein presented of our [proposed]
third ray Protoype, the Great "Goat" star because the
numbers in Her name will be seen to be of the utmost importance
shortly.

Four sounds which equal 16 or 7. Two female and two male.
Law
5. The symbol for this is the mountain with a goat
standing on the summit, and again an astrological sign, that of
Capricorn, can be noted. All hard places can be surmounted, and
the summit reached by the "Divine Goat," symbol of the
group, viewed as a unit.
Law

For
each of these Laws, there is a definite formula and symbol. At
this stage of teaching or through this Treatise, it is not possible
to reveal or impart the formulas. The symbol may be described,
and if the student will carefully ponder upon the nomenclature
of the Law, its occult name and its symbol, much may be gathered
anent group interrelations. It is these laws which the coming
cycle of regeneration will enunciate, and which the Great Lord
will demonstrate upon His appearing, and it is these laws which
will gradually be applied to the working [TCF 1220] methods of
all organizations, brotherhoods, fraternities and masonic circles.
The
symbol of this sign [CAPRICORN, THE SIGN OF THE GOAT] is undecipherable
and intentionally so. It is sometimes called the "signature
of God." I must not attempt to interpret it for you, partly
because it has never yet been correctly drawn and partly because
its correct delineation and the ability of the initiate to depict
it produces an inflow of force which would not be desirable, except
after due preparation and understanding. It is far more potent
than the pentagon and leaves the initiate "unprotected."
In
an ancient astrological treatise which has never yet seen the
light of day but which will be some day discovered when the right
time has arrived, the relation between the horned animals of the
zodiac is thus described:
"The
Ram, the Scapegoat and the sacred Goat are Three in One and One
in Three. The Ram becomes the second and the second is the third.
The Ram that breeds and fertilizes all; the Scapegoat, in [156]
the wilderness, redeems that all; the sacred Goat that merges
in the Unicorn and lifts impaled upon his golden horn the vanquished
form - in these the mystery lies hid."
With
the keynote thoughts of this introductory of the Great "Goat"
star in mind let the student proceed to a study of the third ray
Word of Power.

In
the first place, we can not help but note the close relationship
between the 3rd ray and the 6th ray in the sequence of numbers.
The glphs "6", and "9", are identical, as we
know, simply revesed.
The
[AN] value of the 3rd ray word equals "15", the "sacred"
number of the 6th Ray and the [RAN] value, the "6", representing
one-pointed purpose with the highest light in control.
D.K.,
says: "Curiously enough, there is a close relation between
the third and the sixth rays, just as there is between the first
and the second rays, and the second and the fourth. The fourth,
fifth, sixth and seventh rays have no such paralleling relations.

added to 1 equals 2, 2 added to 2 equals 4, 3 added to 3 equals
6. Between these pairs of rays there is a line of special energy
flowing which warrants the attention of disciples who are becoming
conscious of their relationships. This relation and interplay only
becomes active at a relatively high stage of evolution."
In
the second place, the ratio between the male odd numbers and the
even female numbers speak clearly for themselves. What do I mean
by this? From
out of the 16 total sounds of the 3rd Ray word of Power 12 are odd
numbers, on the 1-3-7 ray line, and 4 are female or even numbers
on the 2-4-6 ray line. Once again, we find 12 + 4 = 16.
Some
students have questioned without studying, I might add, the validity
and occult veracity of the anglo saxon translations of the ancient
SENZAR Ray Words of Power. I, after long years of study, have found,
as we clearly see in this case, once again, great occult truths,
hidden within each carefully numerically and mathematically constructed
phrase or WORD.

The sacral center and the throat. In this there comes a union between
the twelve Creative Hierarchies and the quaternary, and the secret
of the sixteen petals of the throat lotus is seen.[TWM88]

Keep in mind: The transference of energy from the solar plexus to
the heart, and then from all the four centers up the spine to the
throat center occurs, prior to the focusing of the energy of all
the centers in the ajna center (between the eye brows).
The
throat center synthesizes therefore, the energies of the FOUR centers,
i.e., base, sacral, solar plexus and heart. Let me remind students
to carefully note that the throat center is situated in the lower
part of the throat, and properly belongs to the torso and not to
the head. The energies of the throat center are eventually transferred
into the correspondences within the head center. The sevenfold energy
of the planes, and therefore of substance, finds its consummation
when the four lower centers are fully active, synthesized in the
throat center and transferred to the head center.
Let
me remind you of what DK says:
"Saturn
is the synthesizing scheme for the four planets which embody manas
purely and simply, or is the major resolution of the minor four,
and eventually for all the seven."

The throat center synthesizes the entire personality life, and
is definitely connected with the mental plane, - the three planes,
and the two higher planes, and the three centers with the two
other centers, the heart and head. [TCF]

The energies coming from the Pleiades, an AGGREGATION OF SEVEN
ENERGIES are connected with the active intelligent aspect of logoic
expression, and influence the form side of all manifestation.
They focus primarily through Humanity.[EA416] [S> RAY III.

Saturn corresponds to the throat center, or to the creative activity
of the third aspect. [TCF181]
The
four schemes which form the logoic Quaternary [TCF406] will merge
into their synthesizing scheme, that of Saturn, while Venus and
Mercury will merge into Uranus and Neptune. No importance need
be attached to the sequence of these names. The dual fact is all
that is necessary to grasp.
Neptune,
Uranus and Saturn will, therefore, have absorbed the essence of
manifestation and (in connection with the solar Logos) they correspond
to the three permanent atoms in the causal body of a man. We say
"correspond" for the analogy is not in detail. Uranus
and Neptune are reflections of the logoic astral and mental permanent
atoms. Saturn is in fact the correspondence to the logoic physical
permanent atom. This is an occult mystery and must not be separated
from its allied truth in the cosmic scheme.

would like to point out here that in studying the solar system
as the physical manifestation of a solar Logos, we are investigating:
1. The physical permanent atom of a solar Logos as contained
within the logoic causal body on its own plane. [SATURN]
2.
The seven types of force, or the seven logoic spirillae within
that permanent atom. This, if realized, [537] gives a new outlook
upon the subject of plane vibration.
3.
The close correspondence between the planes and the seven spirillae
in the permanent atom of a solar Logos.
On
the 16 petalled Earth Scheme:

"Each of these planetary schemes can be seen as a lotus having
seven major petals, of which each chain forms one petal, but having
also subsidiary petals of a secondary color according to the nature
and karma of the Entity concerned. It is in the enumeration of
these solar lotuses that occult students go astray.
It
is, for instance, correct to say that the planetary scheme corresponding
to the microcosmic base of the spine is a fourfold lotus and has,
therefore, four petals.
There
are four outstanding petals of a peculiar hue,
but there are three of a secondary color, and
nine of a tertiary nature. (To students with
intuition the hint here conveyed may reveal the name of the planet,

However, Saturn, Mars and our Earth constitute, in a curious esoteric
manner, the [EPII99] personality of a stupendous ray Life, Whose
energy is that of the third Ray. There are, as has been stated
elsewhere, seven sacred planets but ten planetary schemes, and
in three cases, (those of the three major rays) three planets
constitute the personality of each ray Life. Some esoteric thinkers
believe that there are twelve planets to be considered in our
solar system, and there is a basis for their conclusion.
The
personality of this third ray Life functions through the following
planets:
1. The mental body expresses itself
through the medium of the planet Saturn.
2.
The astral body expresses itself through the planet Mars.
3.
The physical body expresses itself through the planet Earth.
The
potency of this Life is such that He requires three complete schemes
- all three closely allied and interdependent - through which
to express Himself. Uranus, Jupiter and Venus are similarly allied
in order to manifest or express a great Life.
These
facts constitute a tremendous mystery, and in no way negate the
truth that Venus has a peculiar and intimate relation to the Earth.
Keep
in mind; The 3rd ray sacred Logos of the major planetary scheme
Saturn. The Mother is the expression of the 16-petalled throat center
in the solar system and the 3rd Ray Earth an expression of "Her"
physical body.
In
other words, the expression of Saturn on the physical plane is via
the Earth. Hence, the mind-body connection between the Earth and
its primary in the solar system, Saturn and the intimate conection
of the "4" petals of the basic center of Mother Earth
and the "16" of the solar throat center.

Cosmic
evil from the standpoint of our planet consists in the relation
between
- that
spiritual intelligent Unit or "Rishi of the Superior Constellation"
as He is called (who is the informing Life of one of the seven
stars of the Great Bear, and
- our
planetary prototype) and
- one
of the forces of the Pleiades. (S.
D., II, 579-581.)
Students
need here to remember that the "seven sisters" are
occultly called the "seven wives" of the Rishis, and
that the dual forces (resultant from that relationship) converge
and play through that one of the planetary Logoi who is the
Logos of any particular planet, and is the "reflection"
of any specific Rishi.
In
this relation, at present lacking perfect adjustment, lies hid
the mystery of cosmic evil as it makes itself felt in any particular
planetary scheme.
Again,
when the heavenly triangle is duly equilibrated, and the force
circulates freely through

The Pleiad involved,
3.
The planetary scheme concerned,
then
again cosmic evil will be negated, and a relative perfection
achieved. This will mark the attainment of primary perfection,
and the consummation of the greater cycle.

The seven stars in the constellation of the Great Bear are the
correspondences to the seven head centers in the body of that
Being, greater than our Logos.

These seven head centers are the reflection in the microcosm of
those "mansions prepared in the Heavens" which receive
the sevenfold energy of the monad. These are the chambers prepared
by the lower energy which are to be the recipients of "soul
or the higher psychic energy."

The sevenfold activity of spirit makes itself felt when each of
these seven centers is not only fully active but is rotating as
"wheels turning upon themselves," when they are fourth
dimensional and are not only individually alive but are all linked
up with the sevenfold head center.

Just as the Monad is the sumtotal of all the three aspects, and
of the seven principles of man, so is the head center a replica
of this, and has within its sphere of influence seven other centers
with itself for synthesis. These seven centers are likewise divided
into the three major and the four minor centers, with their union
and consummation seen in the gorgeous center surmounting and enveloping

We must not ignore the three great waves of energy which sweep
cyclically through the entire solar system from:
1.
The seven stars of the Great Bear. The strength of
these vibrations depends upon the closeness of the connection
and the accuracy of the alignment between any particular Heavenly
Man and His Prototype. The mystery here is profound; it is connected
with the stage in evolution of the "imperfect gods"
and the objective of the planetary deities. [S>

The Seven Sisters, or the Pleiades, and from that one
in particular who is occultly termed "the wife"
of the planetary Logos whose scheme will eventually receive
the seeds of life from our planet, which is not considered
a sacred planet, as has before been stated. [S>ALCYONE]

The sun Sirius.

III: ALIOTH
ALIOTH
(Epsilon Ursae Majoris). Third star in from the end, "Alioth"
relates not to a bear, but to a "black horse,"
the name corrupted from the original and mis- assigned to the naked-eye
companion of Mizar, which took on the vaguely similar name "Alcor."
Bayer's rough rule of assigning Greek-letter names more or less
in order of brightness is quite violated here, as the Bear's bright
stars are named from west to east, hence "Epsilon" for
Ursa Major's brightest (bright second magnitude, 1.77) star, indeed
for the 31st brightest star in the whole sky.
A white
class A (A0) star with a measured temperature of 9400 Kelvin, Alioth
shines at us from a distance of 81 light years with a luminosity
108 times that of the Sun, from which we derive a diameter of four
times solar and a mass close to triple that of the Sun. Large and
luminous for its class, Alioth is probably ageing, and is nearing
the end of its main sequence hydrogen-fusing lifetime.
Of
greater significance, Alioth is the brightest of the "peculiar
A (Ap) stars," magnetic stars in which a variety of chemical
elements are either depleted or enhanced, and in addition appear
to change with great regularity as the star rotates. "Chemically
peculiar" behavior in class A and B stars generally comes not
from creation of elements, but from their separation in the relatively
thin stellar atmospheres, some falling downward within the star's
gravitational field, others lofted upward as a result of an outward
push by radiation. Here, they are also apparently related to the
Alioth's magnetic field. Alioth is classed as an "Alpha Canum
Venaticorum" star (after the prototype, Cor Caroli).
Its
magnetic field -- and the chemical composition -- change from our
perspective during the star's 5.1-day stellar rotation period. Some
elements are highly concentrated into distinct regions that swing
in and out of sight as the star spins. For example, the abundance
of oxygen is 100,000 times greater near the magnetic equator than
near the magnetic poles (which are displaced from the rotational
equator and poles); chromium behaves similarly. Heavier elements,
such as the rare earth europium, also display strong variations.
Though
visually the brightest of the peculiar A stars, Alioth is also noted
for having one of the weakest magnetic fields among its class, only
about 100 times that of the Earth, 15 times weaker than that observed
for Cor Caroli.

Prototype is sensed, reaching him via the planetary Logos working

On extra-systemic or cosmic levels, the individualization process
produces a corresponding activity in the egoic body of the Logos,
and hence increased vibration in that center in the body of the
ONE ABOUT WHOM NOUGHT MAY BE SAID, which our Logos represents.
It also produces a reaction or "occult recognition"
in the prototype of the Septenate, or in the seven Rishis of the
Great Bear, and this reaction in cosmic circles will persist until
the end of the mahamanvantara, when the Logos is set free (even
though temporarily), from physical plane existence. [TCF 718]
Cosmic
Avatars: They represent embodied force from the following
cosmic centers among others:
1.
Sirius.

2.
That one of the seven stars of the Great Bear which is ensouled
by the prototype of the Lord of our third major Ray.

Our cosmic center.
[ALCYONE - RAY III]
They
represent entities as far removed from the consciousness of Man,
as man is from the consciousness of the atom of substance. Thousands
of those great cycles which we call "a hundred years of Brahma"
have passed since They approximated the human stage, and They
embody force and consciousness which is concerned with the intelligent
coordination of the starry Heavens.
They
have achieved all that man can conceive of as the transcendence
of will, of love and of intelligence, and in the synthesis of
those three have added qualities and vibrations for which we have
no terms, and which cannot be visioned by even our highest adepts.
Their appearance in a solar system is very unusual, and is only
recognized on the highest two planes. Yet, owing to the material
nature of our solar system, Their advent is literally the appearance
in a physical form of a spiritual Being Who is fully conscious.
Such
entities from Sirius appear at the occasion of the initiation
of the solar Logos, and They have a peculiar connection with the
five Kumaras and through Them (using Them as focal points for
force) with the Mahachohan's department [3RD RAY] in all
the occult Hierarchies of the system. Only once has such a Being
visited our system, in connection with the appearance in time
and space of the five mind-born Sons of Brahma.
The
effect of such a visit as that of the Avatar from Sirius is seen
[TCF 724] as the sumtotal of civilization and culture,
viewing these from the standpoint of the entire system and in
one flash of time.
An
avatar from the cosmic center will appear as pralaya is nearing
and will produce in the body of the Logos that which we call "Death."
He is the cosmic Reaper, and (to reduce the above to words of
an understandable nature) He belongs to a group which represents
the abstracting energy of the cosmos, of which we find faint correspondences
in the work of the "destroyer" aspect of the Logos,
and in the forces which produce physical death, and the disintegration
of the physical body of man. It is not possible to say more oil
these fundamentally esoteric matters, and the value of what is
said lies largely in the bringing to the mind of the student the
reality of our cosmic interrelation.
There
is, as we know, a cyclic shifting of polar inclination, [TCF
1056] due to the gradually increasing responsiveness of the
planetary Logos to His heavenly Prototype, whereby influences
from the Great Bear draw, or occultly, "attract," the
attention of the Logos, and bring Him more into line with a greater
impulsive Will. This shifting causes disruption in His lower manifestation,
which is a condition on the cosmic Path of Initiation analogous
to that undergone by a disciple.
PLEIADES
"Many
a night I saw the Pleiads, rising thro' the mellow shade, Glitter
like a swarm of fireflies tangled in a silver braid."

My topic today on
this third day of June is Open cluster M45 or Messier object 45
- the Pleiades. The classification comes from Charles Messier (June
26, 1730 - April 12, 1817). In 1771, Charles Messier, included the
Pleiades as No. 45 in his first list of nebulae and star clusters.
3h 33m 48s (53d
27' 04") +23d 22' 41"(March 4, 1769) `A cluster of stars,
known by the name of the Pleiades. The position reported is that
of the star Alcyone.'
In this case the
exoteric astronomical numerical classification exactly corresponds
to the esoteric number correlations. Let me demonstrate this fact
through a simple exercising of the Law of Correspondence and Analogy.
The Pleiades are
the cosmic correspondence to the "Mother", or the third
ray and 3rd department of the "Mahachohan" in the planetary
Hierarchy of Earth.
The value of the
word Mahachohan is "45".
Please note therefore
the supreme significance of the symbolism of M45

The numerical value
of the 10 digits which compose the name MAHACHOHAN equal "45"
or "9", as (4+5 = 9). These are, in fact, the key or "SACRED"
figures of the third ray.
The period of peak
emergence, or the high-water mark of the third ray, is at 4.5 which
occurs half-way through its period of 9. In the case of the great
Mother, the Logos of the Pleiades, as just stated, we find that
exoteric astronomical numbers exactly corresponds to Her Sacred
Number - the "9".
In Occult Cosmology
the Universal Postulate upon which the whole of the Manifested Universe
is based is the All-Presence of the Boundless Circle. CIPHER "9",
embodies the power and potency of "SPACE", since "9",
is the value of the Great Circle (3+6+0=9).
The Circle, curving
in upon itself, stands as the chief symbol of the Absolute Perpetual
Motion and Endless Duration of the OAWNMBS. In the region of Occult
Metaphysics the Great Circle is the sign of the Unknown and the
Unknowable Mover, or the truly Self-Existing One.
The Circle symbolises
pure Darkness, because it represents the hidden Absolute Light of
Life itself. As a glyph, the plane of the Great Circle exemplifies
the absolute homogeneous nature of the Divine Essence and the abstract
body of the ever present abstraction - the OAWNMBS.
In Occult Cosmogony,
Space is, in its abstract presence, the Unmanifest Logos itself,
the Ineffable and One Unknown Cause. The idea of representing Absolute
No-thing in the ideograph of the Great Circle brings to view the
idea of the Universe emerging from and in boundless Space, the radiations
from which are periodically aggregated into graduated forms from
pure to gross Matter.
The fundamental
dogma of Occultism is the Unity of all in Nature, in its ultimate
Essence. Every new period of Universal Manifestation or World "Creation",
occurs out of the Eternal Esse, the pre-existent eternal Substance,
or Matter, which Substance is the Boundless Ever-existing Space,
best symbolized by the Great Circle. In the Circle therefore, we
see the idea of the eternal immutability of the One and the changelessness
of that Principle.
The Circle, the
archetype of all round figures, contains a triad in its construction
composed of center, space and circumference. It is the inherent
triad formed by the construction of the Circle which gives rise
to the idea of the triple hypostasis of the Unnamable and Unknown
Essence, the Threefold Being of the Absolute Life, the Root of the
seven fundamental Cosmic Principles.
In Occult cosmology,
therefore the body of SPACE, the Unknown Life ,is best symbolized
by digit "9. It is the "sacred number" of the Great
Mother - the 3rd ray Logos of the Pleiades. Number "9",
is the chief number of Initiation, or of the major Initiations of
Manas, wherein man becomes a perfect Nine.
The "9",
indicates that in all threefold manifestation - (the three major
aspects Monad/soul/personality) - there is a ninefold unfoldment
of consciousness.
Again, understand
that in the decimal system digit "9", represents the limit
of the digits - the extent of the form life. In its chief character
then, this means it stands for the whole body or form, the third
Principle.
The Triple Ternary,
or the "9", is the Divine Glyph of the Immaculate Mother,
the third major aspect of the Creative Logos. The Sacred "9",
therefore, signifies the intelligent working out and material expression
of the Divine Idea of the Plan. Its Cosmic Figure embodies the capacity
to bring objectivity into recognised Divine expression and is the
Universal Symbol of the intra-cosmic flux and flow, the electrical
energy of substance itself, the fusion of Spirit and Matter.
As a Numerical Letter
in the Divine Alphabet the "9", really stands for pure
materialism linked with the distribution of matter and the scattering
of the atoms - the basis for the separative action of atomic matter.
Number "9",
is the Universal Symbol of synthesis on the physical plane and embodies
the potency to manifest all aspects of the Great Plan of the OAWNMBS.

Alcyone is one of the seven Pleiades and is called the "star
of the Individual" and sometimes the "star of intelligence."
It was potently active during the previous solar system wherein

the Trinity, is peculiarly active in this solar system. The energies
coming from Alcyone impregnated the substance of the universe

activity, the same force was present at the time of individualization

upon our planet, the Earth, that the major results of that early
activity have made themselves felt. Two of our planets, the Earth

The Throat
Center. This center is to be found at the back of the neck, reaching
up into the medulla oblongata, thus involving the carotid gland,
and down towards the shoulder blades. It is an exceedingly powerful
and well developed center where average humanity is concerned.
It is interesting to note in this connection that

center is ruled by Saturn just as the two head centers are ruled
respectively by Uranus (ruling the head center) and Mercury (ruling
the ajna center). This is only where the disciple is concerned;
the rulership changes after the third initiation or before the
first. These three planets constitute a most interesting triangle
of forces and in the following triplicities and their inevitable
interrelations you have - again only in the case of disciples
- a most amazing picture story or symbol of the ninefold of initiation:

thus presenting
the mechanism through which the Spiritual Triad, the soul and
the personality work. [EH152] The key to a right understanding
of process lies in the relation of the three planets: Uranus,
Mercury and Saturn, as they pour their energies through these
nine "points of spiritual contact" upon the physical
plane into the "grounded sphere of light and power which
is the man in time and space."

This center is related to the first initiation and develops great
activity when that point in experience is achieved, as it has
been achieved by the vast majority of men who are at this time
the aspirants and the probationary disciples of the world.
(Forget not that, technically speaking, the first major initiation
from the hierarchical angle is the third. The first initiation
is regarded by the Masters as signifying admission to the Path.
It is called an initiation, by humanity, because in Lemurian days,
it was then the first initiation, signifying entrance into complete
physical control). It is the organ for the distribution of creative
energy, of the energy of the third aspect by souls at the above
point of evolution.
There are
three centers in the human being which are related to and the
major expression of the third ray or aspect at certain differing
stages of development upon the path:
1. The sacral
center for the undeveloped and the average man.
2. The throat
center for the aspirant and probationary disciple.
3. The ajna
center for disciples and initiates.
Here again
you have a great triplicity of energies, containing great potencies
today, owing to the fact that the expression of the third aspect
of active intelligence [EH153] has reached such heights through
human development and consciousness.
1.
It is related to the personality by the creative thread, to the
soul by the thread of consciousness, and to the monad by the sutratma
or life thread. It is not related to any of the divine
aspects by the antahkarana because that thread which links monad
and personality directly (and finally independently of the soul)
simply anchors the monadic expression of life in the head, at
the head center. Then direct consciousness is established between
the monad and the personality, and a great duality comes into
being. Life, consciousness and form are then all focused creatively
and actively in the head, and their activity is directed from
the head via the two head centers.
The ajna
center only comes into creative activity when the antahkarana
has been built. In the earlier stages it is the throat center
which is the creative agent, and in the earliest period of all
the sacral center is active. You have, however,
one interesting thing to remember. The building of the antahkarana
only becomes genuinely possible when the creative life of the
aspirant shifts from the sacral center into the throat and is
becoming factual and expressive.
Of this connecting
"bridge," the neck itself is the symbol, as it relates
the head - alone and isolated - to the dual torso, consisting
of that which lies above the diaphragm and that which lies below
- the symbol of the soul and the personality united, fused and
blended into one. The head is the symbol of what Patanjali describes
as the state of "isolated unity."
2.
It is the center through which the intelligence aspect of humanity
focuses creatively. It is therefore the [EH154] center
through which the creative energy of that great planetary center
called Humanity flows. The three major planetary centers are Shamballa,
Hierarchy and Humanity. When perfection has been achieved, the
Shamballa energy of will, power and purpose will pour freely through
the head center, the love-wisdom energies of the Hierarchy will
flow through the heart center, and the energy of humanity will
focus through the throat center, with the ajna center acting as
the agent of all three. Then will take place a new activity on
the part of mankind. It is the task of relating the three superhuman
kingdoms to the three subhuman kingdoms, and thus establishing
the new heavens and the new earth. Then humanity will have reached
the summit of its evolutionary goal on this Earth.
3.
The throat center is the organ specifically of the creative WORD.
It registers the intention or creative purpose of the soul, transmitted
to it by the inflow of energy from the ajna center; the
fusion of the two energies, thus brought about, will lead to some
type of creative activity. This is the higher correspondence to
the creativity of the sacral center. In that center the negative
and the positive creative energies are embodied in the separate
male and female organisms and are brought into relation in an
act of creation, consciously undertaken, though as yet without
much definite purpose.
4.
The dense physical externalization of this center is the thyroid
gland. This gland is regarded as of supreme importance
in the well-being of the average human being of today. Its purpose
is to guard health, to balance the bodily equilibrium in certain
important aspects of the physical nature, and it symbolizes [EH155]
the third aspect of intelligence and of substance impregnated
with mind. It is in reality connected with the Holy Ghost, or
the third divine aspect in manifestation, "over-shadowing"
(as the Bible expresses it), the Mother, the Virgin Mary. The
para-thyroids are symbolic of Mary and Joseph and the relation
they hold to the over-shadowing Holy Ghost. It will eventually
be determined that there is a close physiological relation existing
between the thyroid gland and the pineal gland, and between the
para-thyroids and the two lobes of the pituitary body, thus bringing
into one related system the entire area of the throat and of the
head.
5.
Just as the head symbolizes the essentially dualistic nature of
the manifested God, so the throat center symbolizes the triple
nature of the divine expression. The dualistic nature
appears fused and blended in the head in the relation between
the two centers and their two dense physical reflections. The
three great energies which are brought into play during the divine
creative activity are unified in activity by the full expression
of the energy flowing through the throat center, through the apparatus
of speech and the two lungs. You have in this relation: Life or
Breath, the Word or the Soul, and the throat center of Substance
in activity.
6.
This lotus of the throat is inverted in the early stages of evolution,
and its petals reach out towards the shoulders and include the
two lungs or parts of them. During the life cycle of the soul,
it slowly reverses itself, and its petals then reach out towards
the two ears and include the medulla oblongata and the carotid
gland. This gland is more closely related [156] to the thyroid
gland than it is to the two other glands in the head.
Thus it will
be apparent to you how whole areas of the physical organism can
be brought into active and correct functioning, can be vitalized
and kept in good and true condition by the activity in some form
or another of the center nearest to the area of the body under
consideration. It will also be apparent to you that deficiency
and disease can result from the inactivity of a center.

ALCYONE
(Eta Tauri). Rising over the eastern horizon, Taurus's Pleiades
star cluster announces northern autumn, telling of the cold months
to come, when the group will soar high through the winter sky.
More famed as the
"Seven Sisters," in mythology daughters of Atlas, the
cluster sparkles with a jeweler's collection of blue-white diamonds
packed into a circle a little over a degree across. Nine of the
stars carry ancient Greek proper names, those of the seven maidens
plus that of Atlas himself and of the sisters' mortal mother, Pleione.
All cultures have stories of the group, whose risings and settings
began and ended agricultural and navigational seasons; they have
been flying doves, little eyes, and harvest baskets to hold the
autumn bounty.
Ranging from third
to sixth magnitude, all are potentially visible to the human eye,
but because of crowding most people see 6 or perhaps 8, though the
acute eye can see yet more. With the telescope, hundreds of lesser
lights come into view. Chief among them is Alcyone (the last "e"
pronounced), the only one to acquire a Greek letter name, Eta Tauri.
The six brightest
stars make a small dipper, Alcyone located where the two-star handle
(made of Atlas and Pleione) joins the bowl, three of the sisters
(Merope, Electra, and Maia) making the bowl itself, Asterope, Taygeta,
and Celaeno out in front of it.
All nine are bright
and luminous B stars, Alcyone apparently somewhat evolved (considered
a "giant"), and though (at nearly 13,000 Kelvin) not the
hottest, quite markedly the brightest, having a luminosity 1400
times that of the Sun, the 365-light year distance of the group
reducing Alcyone to bright third magnitude. Tucked next to it is
a smaller binary companion only a few astronomical units away.
Typical of B stars,
all named Pleiades but Maia are rapid spinners. Alcyone, rotating
with an equatorial speed of over 200 kilometers per second (more
than 100 times faster than the Sun), has spun gas from its equator
into a surrounding light-emitting disk to make a "B- emission
star" somewhat like Gamma Cassiopeiae, but one with a disk
thicker than most. Pleione, which rotates even faster, over 300
kilometers per second, is similar. The Pleiades are now moving through
a great dusty cloud of interstellar matter, the dust grains reflecting
the light of the blue stars. Though not visible to the eye, long
photographic exposures show this "reflection nebula" enmeshing
the whole crowd. The nebula is particularly bright around Merope,
just to the southwest of Alcyone, though bright Alcyone carries
her own blue covering shawl. (Thanks to Jason Pero, who helped research
this star.)
Atlas,
425 light years away (as is the rest of the cluster), is (at class
B8) a bit on the cooler side (for the class), with a temperature
around 12,300 Kelvin. It makes up for it by being a giant, a star
that is now evolving with a quiet helium core.
Like the other naked-eye
Pleiades, Atlas is brilliant, radiating 940 times as much light
as the Sun, much of it in the invisible ultraviolet, the luminosity
and temperature telling of a star with a mass about 5 times solar.
Again like many other class B stars, Atlas is a rapid rotator, at
least 212 kilometers per second, over 100 times faster than the
Sun. Could we watch it spin, it would go around in under a day and
a half. Atlas has a reputation as something of a mild "B-emission"
star, implying a ring of radiating material formed as a result of
its rapid rotation. Some 0.4 seconds of arc (at least 52 astronomical
units, 30 percent farther then Pluto is from the Sun) away is a
seventh magnitude class A companion that takes at least 150 years
to circulate. The star also is variable, changing by a very subtle
0.2 percent over a few- day period. Some day all the bright Pleiades
stars will be no more than small white dwarfs set within a merely
modest cluster, one of thousands that dot the Milky Way.
MEROPE
(23 Tauri). Among the classic six visible stars is fourth magnitude
(4.18) Merope, which ranks fifth within the striking group. Of the
Pleiades, only Alcyone carries a Greek letter (Eta), the rest designated
only by Flamsteed numbers (Merope otherwise called 23 Tauri). Merope,
a mid- class B (B6) subgiant lies, along with the rest of the cluster,
at a well-determined distance of 385 light years. From its hot,
blue- white 14,000 Kelvin surface, it shines with a total luminosity
(allowing for ultraviolet light) of 630 times that of the Sun. It
is a particularly fast rotator, spinning with an equatorial speed
of at least 280 kilometers per second, 140 times that of the Sun.
Given that the star is 4.3 times the solar size, it makes a full
rotation every 18 hours. The fast rotation affects the star's surroundings
and the spectrum. Like others in the Pleiades crowd, Merope is an
emission-line (Be, class B emission) star, its rapid rotation flinging
out a disk of bright, emitting gas though Merope's is quite thin
compared with others such as Pleione. Nevertheless, it is sufficiently
dense and hot (from shock waves) to produce observable X-rays.
Merope's greatest
claim to fame, however, is not the star itself, but its surroundings.
The Pleiades is enmeshed in a cloud of dusty gas. The stars are
not hot enough to make the gas glow (as they are to make the Orion
Nebula). Instead, the tiny dust grains embedded in the cloud scatter
and reflect the starlight to make the quite-blue Pleiades reflection
nebula. It is at its brightest around Merope, so bright as to have
special names, the Merope Nebula and "IC 349," the "IC"
standing for Index Catalogue, a large addendum to the standard "NGC"
or" New General Catalogue" of celestial objects, which
in turn is an updating of the great Herschel "General Catalogue."
(The NGC and IC together contain over 12,000 clusters, nebulae,
and galaxies.) Long thought to be the remnant of the Pleiades birth,
the nebula is instead a chance occurrence, as the cluster is merely
passing through an interstellar cloud. (The cluster actually leaves
a wake as the cloud blows past.) The bright class B stars of the
Pleiades are all relatively massive, Merope (which appears to be
beginning to evolve) containing some 4.5 solar masses. Since higher
mass stars evolve first, the cluster and its stars must be relatively
young, Merope and the other Pleiads a mere 100 million years old.

The mythology associated
with the Pleiades cluster is extensive; Burnham alone devotes eight
pages to the subject, and Allen more than twice that number (see
references). Here only Greek legends are presented. Even so, these
are manifold and often contradictory, being patched together from
many different cultures over a long period of time. Further uncertainty
is added by most Pleiads sharing names with otherwise unrelated
mythological characters. So enjoy, but please do not consider this
information to be infallible.

Genealogy
The Pleiad(e)s were
the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione, and
half-sisters of the Hyades, whose
mother was Æthra (`bright sky'; a different Æthra than
the mother of Theseus).
They were perhaps
also half-sisters of the Hesperides, who were daughters of either
Night alone, or Atlas and Hesperis (`evening'), or Ceto and Phorcys.
Both Pleione and
Æthra were Oceanids, daughters of Oceanus and Tethys, the
titans who ruled the outer seas before being replaced by Poseidon.
Atlas (`he who dares'
or `suffers'; from the Indo-European tel-, tla-, `to lift, support,
bear'), another titan, led their war against the gods, and was afterward
condemned by Zeus to hold up the heavens on his shoulders.
The Pleiades were
also nymphs in the train of Artemis, and together with the seven
Hyades (`rainmakers' or `piglets'; individual Hyad names are not
fully agreed upon) were called the Atlantides, Dodonides, or Nysiades,
nursemaids and teachers to the infant Bacchus. The Hesperides (`nymphs
of the west'), apparently not counted in this, were only three,
and dwelled in an orchard of Hera's, from which Heracles fetched
golden apples in his eleventh labor.

Sisters
For each, a name
translation is given first, followed by available biographical information,
and parallel stories of like-named characters.
Alcyone
or Halcyone - `queen who wards off evil [storms]' -
Seduced by Poseidon
and gave birth to either Hyrieus (the name of Orion's father, but
perhaps not the same Hyrieus) or Anthas, founder of Anthæa,
Hyperea, and Halicarnassus.
Another Alcyone,
daughter of Æolus (guardian of the winds) and Ægiale,
married Ceyx of Trachis; the two jokingly called each other Hera
and Zeus, vexing those gods, who drowned Ceyx in a storm at sea;
Alcyone threw herself into the sea at the news, and was transformed
into a halcyon (kingfisher).
Legend has it the
halcyon hen buries her dead mate in the winter before laying her
eggs in a compact nest and setting it adrift on the sea; Æolus
forbids the nest to be disturbed, so the water is calm for 14 days
centered on the winter solstice, called the Halcyon Days. The actual
bird does not build nests however; instead the story probably derives
from an old pagan observance of the turning season, with the moon-goddess
conveying a dead symbolic king of the old year to his resting place.
Though this Alcyone
and the Pleiad Alcyone appear to be separate individuals, they may
be related: in 2000 BC, a vigorous period of ancient astronomy,
the Pleiades rose nearly four hours earlier than they do today for
the same time of year, and were overhead at nightfall on the winter
solstice, when the Halcyon supposedly nested; their conjunction
with the sun during spring equinoxes at that time may have something
to do with the association of the cluster with birds, which are
often used as symbols of life and renewal.
Asterope
or Sterope
- `lightning',
`twinkling', `sun-face', `stubborn-face' (Indo-European ster-, `star',
`stellar', `asterisk', etc.)
In some accounts,
ravished by Ares and gave birth to Oenomaus, king of Pisa. In others,
Oenomaus was her husband, and they had a beautiful daughter, Hippodaima,
and three sons, Leucippus, Hippodamus, and Dysponteus, founder of
Dyspontium; or, Oenomaus may instead have had these children with
Euarete, daughter of Acrisius.
Another Asterope
was daughter of the river Cebren. Still another was daughter of
Porthaön, and may have been the mother of the Sirens, who lured
sailors to their deaths with their enchanting singing.
A possible alternate
name is Asterië (`of the starry sky' or `of
the sun'), which may also be a name for the creatrix of the universe,
Eurynome, in the Pelasgian myth. Graves mentions her as a Pleiad
only in passing, with no other mention in the other references.
Perhaps she was at one time a Pleiad when different names were used,
or an earlier version of Sterope, whose name is similar; or perhaps
Graves is incorrect. He also in passing calls the titan or oak-goddess
Dione a Pleiad, without explanation or corroboration. Does the term
have a broader meaning in some contexts?
Celæno
- `swarthy' - Had sons Lycus (``wolf'') and Chimærus (``he-goat'')
by Prometheus. No other data.
Electra
or Eleckra - `amber', `shining', `bright' (Indo-European wleik-,
`to flow, run', as a liquid); electrum is an alloy of silver and
gold, and means amber in Latin, as does the Greek elektron; Thales
of Miletus noted in 600 BC that a rubbed piece of amber will attract
bits of straw, a manifestation of the effects of static electricity
(outer charge stripping via friction), and perhaps the origin of
the modern term -
Wife of Corythus;
seduced by Zeus and gave birth to Dardanus, founder of Troy, ancestor
of Priam and his house. Called Atlantis by Ovid, personifying the
family. May
also, by Thaumas, be the mother of the Harpies, foul bird-women
who lived in a Cretan cave and harried criminals, but this could
be a different ocean-nymph of the same name.
Another Electra
was a daughter of Oedipus, though this may not be the same Oedipus
who killed his father and married his mother. She is said to be
mother of Dardanus and Iason.
Yet another Electra
was a daughter of Agamemnon and Clytæmnestra, with an alternate
name of Laodice, and with brother Orestes and sisters Chrysothemis
and Iphigeneia (or Iphianassa), though the latter sister may have
been Clytæmnestra's niece, adopted from Theseus and Helen.
Agamemnon was king of Mycenæ and led the Greeks against Troy;
he was murdered at his return by Clytæmnestra and her lover
Ægisthus, both of whom Orestes and Electra killed in revenge,
whence the psychological term `Electra complex'. This Electra was
also wife to the peasant Pylades, and bore him Medon and Strophius
the Second.Maia - `grandmother', `mother', `nurse'; `the great one'
(Latin) -
Eldest and
most beautiful of the sisters; a mountain nymph in Arcadia.
Seduced by Zeus and gave birth to Hermes. Later
became foster-mother to Arcas, son of Zeus and Callisto, during
the period while Callisto was a bear,
and before she and Arcas were placed in
the heavens by Zeus (she as Ursa Major,
he as either Boötes or Ursa Minor).
Another Maia
was the Roman goddess of spring, daughter of Faunus and wife of
Vulcan (his Greek counterpart, Hephæstus, married Aphrodite
instead). Farmers were cautioned not to sow grain before the time
of her setting, or conjunction with the sun. The month of May is
named after her, and is coincidentally(?) the month in which the
solar conjunction happens. By our modern calendar, the conjunction
occurred in April in early Roman times, with the shift since then
due to the precession of the Earth's axis; but calendars too have
changed over time, especially before the time of Julius Caesar,
so the month and the cluster's solar conjunction may have lined
up then as well.
Merope
- `eloquent', `bee-eater', `mortal' -
Married Sisyphus
(se-sophos, `very wise'), son of Æolus, grandson of Deucalion
(the Greek Noah), and great-grandson of Prometheus.
She bore Sisyphus
sons Glaucus, Ornytion, and Sinon; she is sometimes also said
to be mother of Dædalus, though others in the running are
Alcippe and Iphinoë. Sisyphus founded the city of Ephyre (Corinth)
and later revealed Zeus's rape of Ægina to her father Asopus
(a river), for which Zeus condemned Sisyphus to roll a huge stone
up a hill in Hades, only to have it roll back down each time the
task was nearly done.
Glaucus (or Glaukos)
was father of Bellerophon, and in one story was killed by horses
maddened by Aphrodite because he would not let them breed. He also
led Lycian troops in the Trojan War, and in the Iliad was tricked
by the Greek hero Diomedes into exchanging his gold armor for Diomedes'
brass, the origin of the term `Diomedian swap'. Another Glaucus
was a fisherman of Boeotia who became a sea-god gifted with prophecy
and instructed Apollo in soothsaying. Still another Glaucus was
a son of Minos who drowned in a vat of honey and was revived by
the seer Polyidos, who instructed Glaucus in divination, but, angry
at being made a prisoner, caused the boy to forget everything when
Polyidos finally left Crete.
The word glaukos
means gleaming, bluish green or gray, perhaps describing the appearance
of a blind eye if glaucoma (cataract) derives from it. Is the name
Glaucus a reference to sight, or blindness, physical or otherwise?
It is also curious that meropia is a condition of partial blindness.
Another Merope
was daughter of Dionysus's son Oenopion, king of Chios; Orion fell
in love with her, and Oenopion refused to give her up, instead having
him blinded. Orion regained his sight and sought vengeance, but
was killed by Artemis, or by a scorpion, or by some other means
(many versions).
Yet another Merope
and her sister Cleothera (with alternate names of Cameiro and Clytië
for the two of them) were orphaned daughters of Pandareus.
Still another was
mother of Æpytus by Cresphontes, king of Messenia. Her husband
was murdered by Polyphontes, who claimed both her and the throne,
but was later killed by Æpytus to avenge his father's death.
One last, more often
known as Periboea, was wife of Polybus, king of Corinth. The two
of them adopted the infant Oedipus after his father Laius left him
to die, heeding a prophecy that his son would kill him, which, of
course, he eventually did.
Taygete
or Taygeta - ? tanygennetos, `long-necked' -
Seduced by Zeus
and gave birth to Lacedæmon, founder of Sparta,
to which she was thus an important goddess. In some versions of
the story, she was unwilling to yield to Zeus, and was disguised
by Artemis as a hind (female red deer) to elude him; but
he eventually caught her and begot on her Lacedæmon, whereupon
she hanged herself.
Another Taygete
was niece to the first. She married Lacedæmon and bore Himerus,
who drowned himself in a river after Aphrodite caused him to deflower
his sister Cleodice. One of the Taygetes may have been mother to
Tantalus, who was tormented in Hades with thirst and hunger for
offending the gods; however his parentage is uncertain; his mother
may instead be Pluto (not the Roman version of Hades), daughter
of either Cronus and Rhea or Oceanus and Tethys, and his father
Zeus or Tmolus.
Astromorphosis
One day the
great hunter Orion saw the Pleiads (perhaps with their
mother, or perhaps just one of them; see Merope above) as they walked
through the Boeotian countryside, and fancied them. He pursued
them for seven years, until Zeus answered their prayers
for delivery and transformed them into s, king of Pisa. In others,
Oenomaus was her husband, and they had a beautiful daughter, Hippodaima,
and three sons, Leucippus, Hippodamus, and Dysponteus, founder of
Dyspontium; or, Oenomaus may instead have had these children with
Euarete, daughter of Acrisius.
